A few chicken bones may prove the theory that Chumash Indians and Polynesian people interacted several hundred years ago. Researchers found the roughly 620-year-old bones in south-central Chile and determined that the chicken’s genetic sequence matched that of birds from the same period in American Samoa and Tonga. The find supports claims that Polynesians sailed to the New World well before Europeans did.
