Adopt-a-Dog Month

October is Adopt-a-Dog month, and, if you’re in the market for a new best friend, the Santa Barbara Humane Society has plenty of pooches for you to choose from. All their dogs have detailed health and temperament profiles to make finding your perfect match easier, and their reduced dog adoption fee of $49 includes the following: spay/neuter surgery, current vaccinations, complete health screening, a temperament evaluation, background/personality history, a starter packet of food, and a booklet and CD about proper dog care.

StylePhile

Calling All Trendsetters: You know who you are: You coveted round-toed Mary Janes while your pals still pined for pumps with toes so pointy they could be used as weapons. You heralded the return of the high-waisted pant while the masses continued shopping for jeans with a rise that could only be measured in centimeters. When it comes to driving trends, you’re more than happy to take the wheel, and S.B.-based blaec.com wants your help.

Nashville Stalwart Launches New Season

Spanning two seasons that incorporate 12 concerts each year, Sings Like Hell throws forth the very best in both emerging and established singer/songwriters. For years, these artists existed mostly in the liner notes on your favorite albums, but through series like Sings Like Hell-and a recent wider embrace of music in its purest form-these troubadours have surged to the forefront.

Screams of the Dog Whisperer

THE REAL McCAW: This being America, we’ve all become addicted to neat and tidy endings, ideally scrunched into a 30-minute format. This being Santa Barbara-where our civic melodramas have no beginning, no end, and only sprawling middles that yawn on forever-we can forget it.

This Week in History

Positively State Street

TENACIOUS RIFFS: If you just can’t get enough of Tenacious D and its hard-rocking shenanigans, then you are going to love the show going down at the Velvet Jones this week. Up-and-comers Trainwreck will be filling the stage with some serious talent and, if you’re at all acquainted with the silver screen, some quite familiar faces as well. Led by Jack Black’s trusty wingman, Kyle Gass, and backed by an equally talented and high-spirited crew, Trainwreck will knock the socks right off your feet; that is, if they haven’t made your sides split from laughter first.
