Passport to a World of Wine

Although the U.S. has had troubles of late processing passports, Domestic Violence Solutions-Santa Barbara County’s only full-service domestic violence agency-has figured out how to create a passport to a fine wine time, all in support of its good work. For $50, Wine Passport purchasers will receive complimentary wine tastings throughout October (whenever tasting rooms are open) from some of the best wine producers in the valley, including Babcock, Gainey, Lafond, Longoria, Lucas & Lewellen, Mandolina, Palmina, Presidio, Scott Cellars, and Dierberg/Star Lane (which will honor the Passports the last two weeks of October and all of November).

Coming Out and Going Straight

While coming out of the closet is never a particularly fun activity, doing so when one is the only child of conservative, fundamentalist Christians from Orange County is, well, less fun. After enduring a few weeks of less-than-supportive comments from my dad and watching my mom struggle to make sense of her feelings, I made a mixed CD of songs that would keep me cheerful and convinced that coming out was the right thing to do and that loving my girlfriend, Jackie, was a-okay in the grand scheme of things.

We’re proud of the result, which starts hereand continues with online listening and voting at independent.com/bands, but the process was grueling, eliciting more than one “Screw your band issue!” from officemates tasked with handling such a massive amount of content.

Patient Appointed to Interview Mental Health Czar

As a result of political pressure from psychiatric patients organized as Prop 63 4 Me, a fellow county psychiatric patient was appointed to the committee that is interviewing candidates to fill the vacant directorship of the Department of Alcohol, Drug & Mental Health Services. Prop 63 4 Me activists expressed disappointment that their own nominee was not selected.

John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension.

Palpable excitement rippled through the Lobero Theatre as John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension took the stage last Thursday night. For fans of McLaughlin’s 40-plus year career, this night was bound to be something special, and they expressed their appreciation with a standing ovation even before a single note was played. Such an overture was certainly deserved, as he has played with such musical giants as Tony Williams, Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis, and Dennis Chambers, to name just a few.
