Plants Named for Gods and Goddesses

The scientific names of plants are often mysterious. There are some that describe a particular aspect of the plant itself, others that honor either the discoverer of the plant or some other worthy person, but some of the most interesting are rooted in mythology. Gods and goddesses from Greek and Roman religion are now memorialized in this way.

California at War

An encore presentation of the one-hour PBS documentary California at War is showing tonight, Thursday, September 20, at 8 p.m. on KCET. The doc is about how World War II turned California from a rural, backward state into the economic and cultural powerhouse that it is today. Special for Santa Barbarans is the discussion of the Japanese attack on the Ellwood oil fields. It’s a great slice of forgotten history, so tune in tonight.

County Planning Commission Releases Naples TDR Report

After several months of research, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission released a report this week on the feasibility of transferring development rights away from the proposed luxury home development at Santa Barbara Ranch to urban areas.

Man Found Dead On Highway 154

A person described by sheriff’s deputies as a 23-year-old Hispanic male was found dead inside a sleeping bag on 9/17, at the end of a driveway on Highway 154.

Juarez Attorney Asks for Extension
