2007 Fall Arts Preview

While we all appreciate the comforts of home-like picking up a good book, brewing a cup of tea, and putting a stack of lacquered 78s on the old Victrola-that’s really not what the Big Producer upstairs intended for us here in Santa Barbara, especially when there’s such great stuff going on outside our living rooms. When it comes to arts and entertainment, the back-to-school and pre-holiday season of autumn tends to reign supreme. And there’s never been an autumn quite like the present one in Santa Barbara, which promises to be the biggest, baddest, most all-out entertaining arts season ever.

2007 Fall Arts Preview – Dance

Right about now, in the midst of our dry season, dancing up a storm in Santa Barbara sounds like a pretty good idea. Luckily, the arrival of fall ushers in a new season of dance performances and classes, some of which promise to approach prayer in their fervor. Whether or not they are actual rain dances, it’s the season for dancing.

KEYT Introduces Hi-Def Programming

After settling contract disputes, Cox Communications and Santa Barbara’s ABC affiliate, KEYT, announced on 9/6 that high definition will now be offered for KEYT programming.

Sail-Ebration

To celebrate 20 years in operation, Sunset Kidd captain Dennis Longaberger is offering special prices on selected sails. Longaberger was a Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol Officer before he started his sailing business in 1987. Of being around for two decades, Longaberger said, “I believe my success is built on my philosophy to give customers a true sailing experience and not a tourist ride.

Folk Trio Peter, Paul & Mary To Be Honored by Peace Group

“Credit corrupts, and absolute credit corrupts absolutely,” said philosopher and folk singer extraordinaire Peter Yarrow on the phone from Telluride last week. And no, he wasn’t talking about his billing on an indie film. Peter of Peter, Paul & Mary fame was trying to qualify, without much false modesty, the peace award that the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) will bestow upon the trio this Monday, September 17 at the Victoria Hall Theater.

Botanic Graden Development Work Denied

The Santa Barbara County Historic Landmarks Advisory Commission determined that plans for a patio in the meadow of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden are not in compliance with a county resolution.

Permanent Roundabouts to be Placed

Concluding a cantankerous public debate about mini-roundabouts, the Santa Barbara City Council voted 6-1 to authorize a million-dollar construction contract to get three new, improved, and permanent roundabouts built on the upper Eastside.
