Immaculate Machine

The third full-length release by Canadian-bred indie kids Brooke Gallupe, Luke Kozlowski, and Kathryn Calder (of New Pornographers fame) is simple in concept, but intricate in execution. The boy-girl call and response of “Roman Statues” is reminiscent of pop purveyors Belle & Sebastian, while the guitar and cymbal buildup of “C’mon Sea Legs” has a decidedly New Wave feel.

Dawn Hobbs, former crime and courts reporter for the News-Press, bantered with Ampersand Publishing attorney Barry Cappello as she took the stand Friday, September 7, to testify as a government witness against the daily newspaper, which is accused of illegal interference with union organizing.

Love

The late Arthur Lee was one of the 1960s’ greatest psychedelic music geniuses. His oeuvre rightfully belongs alongside those of Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Wilson, yet it remains woefully underappreciated by most. Hopefully, this three-CD setwhich contains more than two-and-a-half hours of music from Love’s first two post-Elektra recordings, as well as previously unreleased live material from its 1970 U.K. tourwill rectify the situation.

Heavy Trash

The hep and hip Heavy Trash belts out a baker’s dozen of trashy tunes dipped liberally in blues, rockabilly, grime, and rock. On this release, Heavy Trash has better luck escaping the particular cul-de-sac in which they’ve found themselves on prior albums, meaning the duo of Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray are expanding their palette. There are more actual songs to sink your teeth into, as opposed to the outbursts of shake and sizzle that encompassed most of their previous works.
