IMMACULATE INCEPTION: An ensemble of all things indie, Immaculate Machine has had quite a peculiar cast since its 2003 inception: Owen Pallett of Arcade Fire, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Mike Olsen of the Hidden Cameras, and-at the center of it all-Kathryn Calder of the New Pornographers. But the fame of its constituents is only one reason to sneak a peek at this Victoria, B.C. quartet. Their third full-length record, Fables, was released in May to rampant critical acclaim.

Halloween

The prospect of a new Halloween film, seven sequels later and nearly 30 years after the original, is not inspiring. But with Rob Zombie directing and the promise of a radical reimagining of the original story of psychopath Michael Myers wreaking havoc on suburban Haddonfield, Illinois, Halloween is more intriguing on paper than its predecessors.

Georges Rouault’s Miserere et Guerre: This Anguished World of Shadows.

This exhibition of prints by the 20th-century French artist Georges Rouault revisits a question that has fruitfully occupied the art department at Westmont College for many years: “Is modernism in art compatible with Christian devotion?” Rouault’s magnificent work answers the question with an emphatic “yes,” and anyone with an interest in modernism, printmaking, the Passion of Christ, or social justice ought to see it.

Black Francis

The Pixies frontman (aka Frank Black) brings back the soft-melodic-meets-heavy-rock sound (aka “loud-quiet-loud”) on this 11-song album, an ode to Dutch painter/musician/loony Herman Brood. Despite a twangy shift toward Nashville in recent years, the guitarist/songwriter still can rock and yell and get weird, as he displays with newfound vigor and vigilance on this release.

Pimp my Ride

This collaborative effort between Airstream and architect/designer Chris Deam takes the idea of traveling in style to new heights. The Design Within Reach Airstream Travel Trailer is a 1st Thursday must-see. Head over to Design Within Reach (607 State St.) from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 6.

Cheese and Beer

Bogart and Bacall. Difford and Tilbrook. Pencils and erasers. Beer and cheese.
