Salt Lake Mayor Takes on Bush

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson may have been greeted with foot-stomping enthusiasm Monday night as he preached the gospel of impeaching President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney to a crowd of about 250 at the Veterans Memorial Building on Monday. But at the Santa Barbara City Council, the idea of passing an impeachment resolution still remains an orphan in search of a parent.

DA Weighs in On Prison Crisis

Santa Barbara County District Attorney Christie Stanley and the district attorneys of 15 other California counties have filed a lawsuit charging that possible plans to release as many as 40,000 inmates from state prison to alleviate overcrowding in California’s notoriously overwhelmed prison system would seriously threaten public safety.

Juarez to Stand Trial

One of the longest preliminary hearings in Santa Barbara history ended with an explosion of emotion from Deputy Public Defender Karen Atkins, as she demanded the chance to sum up evidence she hoped would reduce the severity of the charges against her client, 14-year-old Ricardo Juarez. Late on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 21, and at the end of 12 days of testimony and exhibits, Judge Brian Hill ruled that the evidence against Juarez was sound enough that he could be tried as an adult on charges of murder.

S.B. Resists Housing Mandate

At their meeting on Thursday, August 16, Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) boardmembers chose not to accept the housing mandate forced upon them by the state but rather sought to modify it in a way that could lessen or eliminate the number of units the state says the county needs. While SBCAG officials-the board consists of the five county supervisors, along with a representative from each of the county’s incorporated cities-intend to look at all administrative possibilities first, the option of a lawsuit to contest the mandate has not been ruled out.

La Dolce Vita Is Not for the Timid

In case you were wondering, the title is clearly ironic. But don’t worry; lots of people, including many who’ve seen La Dolce Vita, assume it’s a kind of advertisement for the swinging ’60s.

CAF Encourages Pl¡ticas en espa±ol

It’s an age-old question-does art have the power to effect change? The organizers of Pl¡ticas en espa±ol, or “Conversations in Spanish,” at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF) certainly think so. Debuting on August 25, Pl¡ticas en espa±ol is a free series of six lectures on topics that directly affect the local Latino community, presented in both Spanish and English by internationally renowned artists and scholars.

Polo’s Pacific Coast Open Rolls On in Santa Barbara

The beauty of polo is the synchronization of horse and rider, making it the fastest ball game in the world. With the horses topping 30 miles per hour, it is safe to say that the games at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club last Sunday afternoon were moving faster than the thick southbound traffic on nearby Highway 101 through Carpinteria.

Superbad

Earlier this summer, director Judd Apatow and star Seth Rogen teamed up to deliver the delightfully crass Knocked Up. For Superbad, Apatow serves as producer, Rogen co-wrote the screenplay, and Greg Mottola (The Daytrippers) takes over directing duties.
