It was a long afternoon for Santa Barbara News-Press Associate Editor Scott Steepleton in the first day of the trial. In response to questions posed by prosecutors with the National Labor Relations Board-who charged the News-Press with illegally firing pro-union reporters for a host of legally protected union activities-Steepleton frequently answered that he did not remember.
For months, it appeared as if this November’s City Council race would be a total non-event. No one, other than the three incumbents seeking re-election-Brian Barnwell, Helene Schneider, and Das Williams-evidenced any interest in the contest. Republicans, business interests, Latino activists, neighborhood advocates, fiscal hawks, and slow-growthers upset by the high-density direction of City Hall might grind their teeth about the current council, but no one had fielded a candidate.
With the start of the school year less than two weeks off, inaction by the Santa Barbara School Board at its Tuesday meeting left parents and teachers in the audience audibly frustrated and Trustee Bob No»l zero-for-three in motions made by the time Board President Nancy Harter adjourned the meeting. Just off Highway 33, as you enter the upper Cuyama Valley, a dirt road cuts across the river leading to the Tinta OHV (off-highway vehicle) route and Rancho Nuevo Canyon, a part of the Dick Smith Wilderness. In a few days, this area will be fired out along the Cuyama River northwest to Santa Barbara Canyon. The fire is getting that close.
The rapturous response for Charlie Haden’s Quartet West at the Lobero Theatre last November was in no small part due to the playing of saxophonist Ernie Watts. Since joining the Quartet West when it formed in 1987, Watts has made it clear that he belongs in the elite category of major jazz saxophonists alongside big names like Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins. He carves up the changes and rides the rhythm section with the best of them, bringing a soulful, bluesy tinge to the full range of post-bop, post-Coltrane sax techniques.
