Colorful Counsel Lauded by Colleagues

Santa Barbara County Counsel Shane Stark chose three words to describe the difficulty of working as an attorney in Santa Barbara County: complexity, bellicosity, and litigiousness. And according to some who have worked and interacted with Stark-who is retiring come January 2008 after 13 years as county counsel and 20 years with the county-he has handled the three with style, humor, and an unmatched work ethic.

Skirmish at Botanic Garden

A new terrace exhibit on the west side of the Meadow area at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is coming under scrutiny from some community members, including members of the county’s Historic Landmarks Advisory Commission (HLAC), who say they should have been forewarned that the work on the project was taking place.

Daily Sound Ordered to Surrender Photos

The Santa Barbara Daily Sound will face contempt-of-court charges if the newspaper refuses to turn over unpublished photographs taken in the aftermath of this spring’s fatal gang melee in front of Saks Fifth Avenue in downtown Santa Barbara. The photos were subpoenaed by Public Defender Karen Atkins to help the defense of her client, 14-year-old Ricardo Juarez, who is accused of murdering 15-year-old Luis Angel Linares.

Rhapsody in Yellow

I remember watching the first-ever episode of The Simpsons. Titled “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire,” this Christmas-themed pilot aired December 17, 1989-at a time when I doubt my seven-year-old brain understood most of the jokes or could have expected how this bug-eyed, surreally yellow family would figure so largely into my life. I know, I know-it’s The Simpsons, for god’s sake, but here I am making a case for the value of this TV show.

Daughtry

“Do you mind if we get sappy on you?” singer Chris Daughtry asked the 6,000-plus fans who showed up last Saturday to hear him perform at Paso Robles’s Mid-State Fair. The band had already ripped through six rocking tunes before slowing the pace a bit with the love song “What About Now.”

Cattle Drives through the County

Milpas Street has always been a busy thoroughfare; before the cars, there were the cows. The following excerpt from Yankee Barbare±os by historian and writer Walker A. Tompkins tells of a time when Santa Barbara’s Eastside and the surrounding area was the main artery for marching cattle through town, which often caused unwanted mixing of local herds with those passing through, much to the dismay of Santa Barbara ranchers.

A Trio of New Poetry Books from Artamo Press

Santa Barbara’s Artamo Press has published its second poetry series of three volumes and launched the series at a reading June 17 at the Karpeles Manuscript Library: Libido Dreams by Glenna Luschei, Adventures of the Minor Poet by David Starkey, and The Doves Flew High by David Krieger.

Succulent Crossbreeds

Plants, more than any other denizens of nature, are often quite promiscuous. Cross-pollination between species among many plants is common and crosses between different, closely related genera are found in nature, as well. Humans also bring them home, creating even more hanky panky. Among the crossbreeds are some striking and useful succulent hybrids to include in the drought-tolerant landscape.
