Zaca Fire Rages in Backcountry

What started as an auspicious Independence Day did not end that way, at least not for several area ranch hands repairing a water pipe in the Santa Ynez Valley. Sparks from a metal grinder ignited nearby brush, and the flames spread before the crew could stomp them out. The location was Bell Canyon-not too far from Zaca Lake and about as unfortunate a location for a fire to start as one could find.

Ojai versus Big Trucks

Nestled at the intersection of State Route 33 and Highway 150, Ojai enjoys a reputation as one of Santa Barbara’s most idyllic inland neighbors. Tucked in the shadow of the Santa Ynez Mountains and just a short drive from Ventura, the Ojai Valley is an oasis in the sprawl of Southern California. However, with plans to expand gravel mining operations in the area, the sleepy little city of about 8,000 residents is facing a potential daily invasion of several hundred 80,000-pound rock-hauling Mack trucks on their way to and from the Cuyama Valley mines.

Frimpong to Stand Trial

The alleged rapist’s DNA was not found inside her, but hers was found on him. That was the testimony of California Department of Justice criminologist Lillian Tugado, who took the stand Monday, July 9, during a preliminary hearing in the rape prosecution of UCSB soccer player Eric Frimpong.
