Venoco Seeks Carp Expansion
Enviros, earth crusaders, and assorted other folks concerned with the well-being of our coastline got a new bogeyman this week as the draft Environmental Impact Report for a proposed oil and gas drilling operation in Carpinteria was released for public consumption. The hefty 763-page document details the good, the bad, and the ugly associated with the Paredon Project-a proposal from local oil heavyweight Venoco that aims to mine the crude oil and natural gas hiding in two existing state oil leases just offshore from the company’s property near the Carpinteria Bluffs.
Jury Finds Anti-White Bias
In what may be the first lawsuit in Santa Barbara County to successfully allege racial discrimination against whites, a civil jury awarded $384,000 plus attorney’s fees to three former employees of American Indian Health & Services (AIHS).

Teens Work Closely with Master Artists in Arts Fund Program
Gourds fill a blue glass bowl, spilling out onto the table. A red bowling pin perches nearby. Behind a row of easels facing the scene, teenaged apprentice artists make minute adjustments to their still life paintings. One is using tracing paper to alter the outline of the pin by millimeters. Another applies a thin, transparent layer of cadmium yellow, brightening a too-green gourd.

Ojai Music Festival at the Libbey Bowl, Ojai.
These internationally known concerts are going strong in their 61st year, and continue to attract a sophisticated audience to Ojai’s historic Libbey Bowl. Friday evening’s program was a perfect example of why this festival remains great: three incredible pieces of music, four pianos, six percussionists, one living (and conducting) composer-Peter Etvs-and, for the finale, four singers plus the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
