A Matter of Taste

It turns out that talking about balance in a wine becomes a subjective undertaking pretty quickly. Some winemakers consider their wines balanced if they prove to taste integrated in their youth; if there is an ample amount of fruit, oak, and spice in a given wine, then it is, in their eyes, balanced. Other winemakers consider a wine to be balanced if it adheres to certain principles, such as if it is varietally correct. Does it possess a reasonable, but not high, amount of alcohol?

Art for Africa

The Damazo Majak Foundation and Arts Aids Art are bringing a contemporary exhibit of South African art to benefit families afflicted with AIDS in Cape Town. The event, which will be at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, features Sudanese-born activist Anna Akot as well as glass-beaded dolls, wearable beads, and other artisan jewelry that range from $6-$250.

SBMA Director Announces His Retirement

Phillip M. Johnston announced this week that he is leaving his position as director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, although he will stay on until his successor is named. A renowned scholar of American art and antiques and an influential figure in the museum world, Johnston has left a powerful legacy at the SBMA, and he will be missed.

The Anacapa Strut

t’s been a while since I’ve prowled the lower reaches of the downtown club scene and even longer since I’ve participated in the ever-popular collegiate State Street Crawl. But in the last few months there have been some noteworthy changes, and a new arrival on the nightclub landscape is hard to resist. Such trusted options for stiff drinks and go-go-ogling as Joe’s Cafe and the Wildcat Lounge have become venerable downtown mainstays, and even Tonic already has a year beneath its belt.

Jackson Pollock Play

Bruce Clarke’s renowned play Fifteen Rounds with Jackson Pollock is coming to Victoria Hall Theater for a three-weekend run starting tonight, Thursday, May 31. Presented by DIJO Productions and Virtual Theatre Company, directed by Aaron Levin, and starring Ed Giron, Jennifer Gimblin, David Brainard, and Kathy Marden, Fifteen Rounds covers the career of the splatter painter and his relationship with his wife, Lee Krasner.

Ron Skaggs 1937-2007

his is the thing about Ron: We had been over to Cottage Hospital to meet him before his surgery. He was pretty miserable, with a lot of pain in his belly. Mostly because he did not have any options, he reluctantly agreed eventually to move into our small hospice.

Rockin’ the Hood

Beneath a dim barroom light, Jon Styles walks onto the makeshift stage and takes the microphone. As the singer eases into Live’s 1994 hit “I Alone,” the crowd hoots and hollers with approval. “It’s easier not to be wise/You measure these things by your brains,” he begins with restrained intensity before unleashing the howling chorus. It’s Friday night and karaoke at the Tiburon Tavern is one of the hottest tickets in town, thanks, in great part, to Styles, an extraordinary singer who delivers performances you’d expect to hear at the S.B. Bowl rather than at a neighborhood bar on upper State Street.

The Various and Sundry Tour

When Glen Phillips returned from his European adventure at the beginning of 2007, he celebrated by inviting a collection of friends to a special Sings Like Hell performance at the Lobero Theatre. Joining Phillips onstage were Grant-Lee Phillips, Sean and Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek, Benmont Tench, Greg Leisz, and Luke Bulla.

The Odyssey, presented by Boxtales Theatre Company. At the Lobero Theatre, Thursday, May 24

Until I saw Boxtales Theatre Company’s production of The Odyssey last week, I thought I’d left behind quality physical theater when I left London. All the wild, experimental, thrilling, and effective physical theater I had ever seen was European. I knew vaguely of Boxtales as a children’s theater troupe, and had seen snippets of the company’s work on school cafeteria stages, but I hadn’t realized they trained with James Donlon, a master of movement theater, and I had no idea of the sophistication of their work. I’m learning fast.
