Nestled as it is at the end of an alleyway lined with succulents and weathered picture frames, one could easily miss the Art Resources Gallery, which doubles as a frame shop. Inside this hidden creative space, Santa Barbara photographers Kate Connell and Larry Mills’s current exhibit, Interpretations of Landscape, juxtaposes the artists’ natural visions with their subjects’ synthetic materials and obstructed vistas.
Things haven’t been the same since good old Thomas Edison figured out how to light up the night. The rhythms of life have been forever changed by that electrifying discovery, with ever-increasing hordes of party people choosing to get down after sundown. Though I am pretty sure it wasn’t his intention, Edison’s big turn-on was a stroke of genius that has since illuminated countless dance floor dreams and libation-soaked evenings.
Keeping your party schedule in order can prove difficult for even the most organized Santa Barbaran. And don’t we all hate that blank spot on the wall that just begs for something to be hung?

THE RULER’S BACK: Hip-hop fans, rejoice. A legend will be among us on Sunday, June 3 as the eye-patched, honey-dripping patriarch of storytelling rhymes takes the SOhO stage-that’s right, Slick Rick the Ruler is coming to town.
• Members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Santa Barbara are looking for volunteers to join them at Loyola Marymount University for this summer’s Muscular Dystrophy Association camp. Volunteers will be responsible for providing support to youth, ages 12-21, living with neuromuscular diseases. The camp runs the week of July 8. Call 563-0456.
Lifesavas’s Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack: This hip-hop opera from Portland’s finest rappers is set in Razorblade City and stars Vursatyle as “Bumpy Johnson,” Shines as “Jimmy Slimwater,” and Jumbo as “Sleepy Floyd.”
The Presidio Chapel, with its bright Mexican altar and candlelight, is one of the most romantic spaces in Santa Barbara and it made a great setting for this female singer/songwriters concert. If there were technical difficulties-and there were-chalk that up to the experience, as this was the first of what is said to be a series of musical evenings produced by Brett Leigh Dicks and sponsored by KCRW.
