SBMA’s The Dwight and Winifred Vedder Collection

On April 28, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art will open one of its most exciting and personal exhibitions of the year when it unveils the 13 works recently donated by Winifred Vedder and her late husband, Dwight Vedder. The Vedders are ranchers who have grown avocados here in Santa Barbara County for several decades. They began collecting art in the late 1970s when they met Los Angeles art dealer Louis Stern, who took them to the great art auctions and helped them get started.

March 31, Contemporary Arts Forum: David Starkey recognizes that many in the audience have been to recent readings, and so reads “from the B-side” of his book. Starkey admits, “I think my best poems are edgy and a little distasteful, and I don’t want to come across like that as a person you know.” Though Cecilia Woloch fusses about her reading glasses and asks us if we know where the Carpathians are, her poems are downright sexy. From a villanelle: “His eyes are Hindu blue and when he smiles / I taste the way he’d kiss me, hot and mild.”

Elections by the City, For the City

Clearly not happy with the county’s projected cost to conduct this fall’s municipal election, Santa Barbara city councilmembers decided on Tuesday, April 24 that the city will conduct its own election this November, when voters will be asked to approve a change to the city’s future election schedule. City officials estimate a traditional poll would cost the city $296,640, a far cry from the $47,000 the County of Ventura is charging the City of Ventura for a similar election.

At the opening of Camerata Pacifica’s April concert, Adrian Spence assured the audience that there would be no difficult music on the program, just lots of “vacuous virtuosity.” The musicians then played Cafe Concertino by the Australian composer Carl Vine, a work for flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and piano that is based on a formidably intricate scheme for creating tonal ambiguity-just the kind of academic exercise Spence claimed to have foresworn.

It punctuated his career when, in the mid ’80s, he took a musical hiatus as he battled addiction. And it empowers his songs. Going into Tuesday night’s Santa Barbara School Board meeting, one thing was certain: The children of our community were guaranteed to be the big losers in what was sure to be a full-scale assault on the district’s budget. The beans were spilled earlier this month when the district’s money guru, Ed Diaz, told the board that their new contract with the teachers’ union would necessitate some $3.35 million in cuts in order for the budget to meet the required three percent reserve.

Trees for Life

National Arbor Day is tomorrow, the fourth Friday in April. Hard on the heels of Earth Day, it may be difficult to keep the fervor going, but let’s talk about trees. Now that (almost) everyone agrees that global warming is a fact and that one of the major causes is the release of carbon into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels, it should be easy to see why having more trees around is a good idea. Just to review: Plants use carbon from the atmosphere as a major building block for their bodies.
