MachineTalker, Inc., headquartered in Santa Barbara, has acquired Micro Wireless Technologies from Utek Corporation in a stock transaction, the companies announced on January 3. MicroWireless holds the license for a technology developed at the University of South Florida that embeds chemical and physical property sensing within radio-frequency transmission systems. This environmental sensor “has the potential to combine traditional sensor and telemetry capabilities into one function,” according to Utek. MachineTalker has developed security and tracking networks for governments, businesses, and individuals. Wireless tracking devices, some of them extremely small, have been used to identify and convey information about workers, vehicles, and other objects in applications as diverse as medicine, military intelligence gathering, wildlife tracking, and leak detection in household plumbing.
