UCSB Announced New Program for Energy Efficiency

Multi-Disciplinary Work to Look at Computers, Energy Conversion

It was announced on February 28 that UCSB will soon feature an Institute for Energy Efficiency. Professor John Bowers, currently of the school’s from the electrical and computer engineering department, will direct 50 faculty members in a multi-disciplinary approach. The goal of the institute is to lower the global demand of energy. This is the conceptual inspiration of Dean Matthew Tirrell from the College of Engineering. The Institute for Energy and Efficiency will focus on such fields as computing and networks, lighting and displays, energy conversion, transmission, and storage. The institute will also sponsor international meetings concerning energy efficiency.
