Even condo projects with as few as two units will have to include affordable housing or pay in-lieu fees, if recommendations adopted on 4/2 by the Santa Barbara City Council’s Ordinance Committee hold sway when they are voted on by the full council. The $17,000 in-lieu fee imposed upon projects with two to nine units would subsidize housing affordable to middle- and upper-middle-income workers. Currently, only projects with 10 or more units must include affordable dwellings.

The nearest competitor was Redwood City, with a median price of $875,000. The median price for a home in the South County was $1,295,000, while the median for North County houses was $333,293.
