Anti-tax crusaders Lanny Ebenstein and Joe Armendariz have endorsed a bond measure: Measure V, Santa Barbara City College’s effort to raise $77 million. The measure, which goes before district voters in the upcoming June election, targets what structures and repairs the money will be spent on. The college claims Measure V could be used to leverage up to $99 million in matching state funds.

A lengthy nationwide search for a new president for Santa Barbara City College ended this week with the college’s Board of Trustees announcing the selection of Andreea Serban, current vice chancellor of Technology and Learning Services at the South Orange County Community College District in Mission Viejo. Serban previously served as Santa Barbara City College’s associate vice president for Information Technology, Research and Planning.

Due to rising unemployment, the collapsing real estate market, and plummeting retail sales, UCSB researchers claim California could expect a recession this year. Though the California economy will be hit harder than the rest of the nation, according to the UCSB Economic Forecast Project’s 2008 outlook, Executive Director Bill Watkins iterated that the recession would be mild. This forecast also predicts that the decline in home sales will continue.
