Harvey Karman, 84, who developed and promoted safer early abortion techniques in the early 1970s, died of a stroke at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on 5/6. Karman served nearly three years in a state prison for his work with abortion, which was illegal before Roe v. Wade was decided in the Supreme Court. The soft plastic cannulaa flexible plastic tubedeveloped by Karman for abortions is still in use today.
