Newsweek magazine released its ranking of the nation’s top 1,300 public high schools last week. Two Santa Barbara County schools placed: Santa Barbara High Schoolwhich rose to 807, up from 918 last yearand Goleta’s Dos Pueblos High School, which placed at 944, down from 771 last year. Some 500 UCSB service workers belonging to the American Federal State County Municipal Employee Union (AFSCME) plan to strike on 6/4 and 6/5, following 10 months of negotiations resulting in an offer of a 39-cent raise over a three-year period. The UC system responded to the strike plans with tenders to bargain further, but AFSCME leaders said they will not accept any offer they consider indecent. (/ucstrike)
