The Santa Cruz Island Foundation on 11/1 celebrated the placement of a proper tombstone at the Calvary Cemetery site where Captain George Nidever is buried. A legendary seafaring pioneer of the Santa Barbara Channel, Nidever is remembered, among other things, for rescuing the woman whose story inspired Island of the Blue Dolphins. His burial records became confused after his remains were moved several times, but historians finally pinpointed his final resting place. Catholic officials gave the spot an official Church blessing as Nidever’s descendants looked on. (/nidever)
