Thomas Bruice, UCSB professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has been awarded the 2008 Linus Pauling Medal by the Portland and Puget Sound chapters of the American Chemical Society in honor of his work, which bridged the scientific fields of chemistry and biology and explained the biochemical bases for countless natural processes. Though UCSB won MTV’s Ultimate College Bowl contest by registering the most student voters before this week’s national election, it may lose the first-prize “free” Death Cab for Cutie concert. After finding out the concert would actually cost students $9,000, Associated Students received only a $7,500 allocation from the winter budget for the concert. If UCSB cannot pay all costs, the concert passes to UC Berkeley, which came in second.
