A second arrest was made last week in the hit-and-run that killed 18-year-old USC student and Santa Barbara native Adrianna Bachan and severely injured 19-year-old Marcus Garfinkle. Josue Luna, 32, who was allegedly a passenger in Claudia Cabrera’s car when she struck the students, was taken into custody on 4/24 at the U.S.-Mexican border in San Ysidro. Cabrera, Luna’s wife, was arrested on 4/2.

Authorities arrested only one DUI driver following the 4/18 Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Festival in Lompoc. She was driving a car full of people and had allegedly been drinking at several wineries as well as having wine with dinner. Increased patrolling led to 42 traffic stops and 11 DUI investigations. Authorities also reported many buses, limousines, and designated drivers-“Just what we want,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Win Smith.

A Hope Ranch home sustained considerable damage after a fire broke out on 4/15. Roughly 25 percent of the 10,000-square-foot home sustained smoke damage, while the fire, which caused $35,000 in damages, was confined to one room. There were no injuries to firefighters or to the homeowner of 4455 Via Bendita, who was home at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
