Edison to Pay $50 Per Working Appliance

On Saturday, May 8, the South County Energy Efficiency Partnership (SCEEP) — which brings together Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas Company, and the local government agencies of Goleta, Carpentaria, and Santa Barbara — will host a free refrigerator and freezer pick up day.

SCEEP will pick up old, working units free of charge, and will dismantle them at a recycling center where the metals and refrigerants will be removed in an environmentally safe manner, according the nonprofit resource and education organization. Edison promises $50 for working refrigerators and freezers, with a limit of two units per qualifying customer.

“Typically, an older refrigerator or freezer uses twice as much electricity as a newer model,” said James Dewey, city facilities and energy manager. “Thus, even though a new refrigerator or freezer is a significant expense, it can lead to substantial savings in energy and money, helping the environment — and your wallet.”

The event is among a number of Southern California Edison energy efficiency outreach programs presented by SCEEP, which was also a sponsor of last week’s Community Environmental Council’s 2010 Earth Day Festival.

Visit SCEEP.org or call 1 (800) 234-9722 to register or receive more information on the pickup day.
