Mize Codefendants Must Wait to Sever Cases

Motions by three codefendants—Ricardo Nava, Bryan Medinilla, and Raul Diaz Jr.—to sever their murder and attempted murder cases from the fourth defendant, Ruben Mize, will be heard on 9/23 after the case was continued on 9/10. Earlier this year, a jury was hung on whether the four—all juveniles at the time of the stabbing—were culpable for the murder of 16-year-old Lorenzo Carachure in 2007 as well as for two attempted murders, though all four were found guilty of being in the Eastside gang. The three defendants are now attempting to try their cases separately from Mize, who is considered by authorities to be most responsible.
