Common Ground S.B. Readying Second Volunteer Army

Volunteers from Faith Groups Will Support Newly Housed Homeless

Fri Sep 02, 2011 | 11:00am

A subcommittee of Common Ground Santa Barbara is meeting every other week to plan a mass training of volunteers who can be deployed to help chronically homeless people adapt and succeed in housing units as the process of housing people from the Vulnerability Index (VI) moves forward.

Sound familiar?

Not unlike the original army of volunteers Common Ground S.B. deployed in the predawn hours last winter to survey homeless residents, this new battalion will focus entirely on supporting people once they’re housed. The vision, according to Common Ground S.B.’s Jeff Shaffer, is to have volunteers work in teams of 10 or 12, with each assigned to a single individual. To read more, see homelessinsb.org.
