UCSB’s College of Letters & Science Gearing Up for Fall Quarter

Victor “Bart” Bartolome: 1919-2011

Bart received two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star, but the decoration he cherished most was the wedding ring placed on his finger by Isabel Hayden on August 1, 1943, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara.

My Life

This year, I planned ahead. I built ambitious, seven-foot-tall tomato cages out of heavy construction wire. I bought young, vigorous tomato plants and got them in the ground extra early.

My Visit to the MLK Memorial

When I left Santa Barbara in mid-August to attend a family reunion in New Jersey, it was also with the burning desire to be present at the unveiling of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Monument in Washington D.C. I wanted to be at the memorial ground because Dr. King had made such an indelible impression on me during his “I Have a Dream” speech. On that day in 1963, I knew that the delivery and power of his words would echo long after it was over.
