The Santa Barbara Unified School District mailed out 70 layoff notices to probationary and permanent teachers well ahead of last week’s March 15 deadline. How many of those teachers get hired back depends both on state budgeting and union negotiations as the district figures out how to close a $5.8 million budget gap. On top of those 70 teachers, 67 temporary teachers on one-year contracts will also have to hold their breath. Carpinteria Unified sent out 14 layoff notices this year.
