Granite Construction broke ground on a project to replace of the century-old Chapala Street Bridge this week. During construction, which will extend into winter, the intersection of Chapala and West Yanonali streets will be closed. Turnaround pockets will be made available to accommodate area traffic, said city spokesperson Kirsten Ayars.
Caltrans recently deemed the Chapala bridge, originally built in 1909, structurally deficient. The new bridge, which is designed to accommodate current earthquake safety and structural guidelines, will also complement the surrounding neighborhood through the installation of new street lighting, sidewalks, and landscaping, according Ayars.
The total cost of construction is projected at $3.2 million. The majority of the funding comes from a Highway Bridge Program federal grant, while the difference will be covered by the city.
