State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson has authored a bill that would require the pharmaceutical industry to implement a statewide program for people to turn in their unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs, in an effort to prevent abuse, accidental overdoses, and water contamination. Jackson said the bill, SB 1014, is modeled after programs in Canada and one in Alameda County that is currently being challenged in court by the pharmaceutical industry; the bill would be the first such statewide program in the country.
