Nearly 1,100 volunteers beautified 25 beaches and parks across Santa Barbara County on 9/20, collecting 3,864 pounds of trash and 831 pounds of recyclable materials as part of the annual Coastal Cleanup Day; County Public Works and the cities of Santa Barbara and Goleta helped organize this year’s effort. The annual event — which started in California in 1985 and now spans the globe — allows the Ocean Conservancy to study the effects and location of garbage in marine areas. Last year saw close to 650,000 people across 92 countries pick up 12 million pounds of trash.
