A jail inmate briefly escaped custody this morning as he was being unloaded from a Sheriff’s bus at the county courthouse. According to Sheriff’s spokesperson Kelly Hoover, 41-year-old Cristian Otey — originally arrested on November 17 and facing domestic violence and assault charges — was handcuffed and secured to a chain with other inmates when he managed to escape out of his cuffs using a “jail-made instrument.” Otey then slipped between a security door and the bus, jumped a fence, and broke away from a custody deputy. Sheriff’s deputies gave chase and apprehended Otey, who had stripped off some of his jail-issued clothing, less than a block away on East Carrillo Street. Otey is now also charged with escape and resisting a public officer, Hoover said.
