Warming Shelters Continue to Open

Tue Dec 16, 2014 | 11:00am
Santa Barbara's First Presbyterian Church presented a warm scene Monday night as several people sought shelter from the damp and cold.

As the rain continues to pour early this week, warming centers continue to activate, with locations open Tuesday and Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Barbara, Veterans Memorial Hall in Carpinteria, University United Methodist Church in Isla Vista, Peace Lutheran in Lompoc, and Salvation Army in Santa Maria. A handicap shuttle service will run to the Presbyterian Church from the Unitarian Society starting at 6 p.m.

According to organizer Maria Long, 90 people stayed in warming shelters on the South Coast on Monday night, and she estimated about another 30 or so people visited shelters in North County. The warming shelters have no sobriety requirement, and the mission of the organization is to provide beds for homeless individuals during rainstorms.
