Wildfire Basic Training Offered to Women

Sat Aug 27, 2016 | 06:00am

The Women in Wildfire Basic Training camp is seeking highly motivated, mentally and physically fit women of 18 years or older who can pass Los Padres’ wildland work test at the “arduous” level. This is the second year for the weeklong, on-site field school that focuses on training female entry-level firefighters. The camp includes hiking that simulates the demands of a wildfire fighter’s job and learning the use of protective gear and line equipment, strategy and basic incident management, and safety and fire behavior.

Those who pass the Basic Training and work test may be eligible for on-call and temporary work to support wildland fire suppression operations that erupt during the Southwest’s long hot summers. The camp takes place November 28-December 2 in the Santa Barbara back country. Applications are available here, and the deadline to return them is September 8.
