Over the course of my career as a journalist, I’ve reported from countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Iraq, where death squads operated in the shadows, often with state support or acquiescence. It was always a relief to come home to the United States.
Today, with Trump’s ICE taking on a role that echoes those dark experiences, I’m troubled by the fear that we are moving in a direction that once seemed unimaginable.
