I’m not a parent so I don’t know if it is my place to complain, but I found the birthday party article in the August 13-20 issue a bit insensitive. Many of the suggestions for kids’ party activities were expensive (close to $30 per person or hundreds of dollars).

I’m sure the intention was only to point out fun activities, but the inclusion of phrases like “annual parenting exam” and “do something that no one has done yet” make it seem like a competition. The author concedes that “presents and cake at home” are “perfectly fine,” but the party suggestions imply that parents need to show their love by spending more.

I liked the DIY section because those options seemed very fun and affordable. I wish it could have been expanded and perhaps include a reader poll of the best local beaches and parks to host parties. We are very lucky to live where there are many wonderful outdoor spaces (which are free!) and rarely any bad weather.

I’ve had and attended many birthday parties at the beach and have never been disappointed. Playing in the surf and sand or on a jungle gym with friends easily makes a best day ever. It’s nothing spectacularly new, but sometimes tried and true is the best way to go. And, in the end, it’s not about the expenses for the parents but the enjoyment for the kids.
