Trust for Historic Preservation Celebrates 50 Years
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North’s (RCSBN) Adams Family of the Month program honors hard-working, ethical and socially engaged families who contribute to Adams School and provide positive role models for their children and the entire community. On May 8th, Community Service Chair Tom Jacobs and Adams Principal Amy Alzina presented the family with their award certificate.
After taking a rented camper outfitted with special equipment to measure methane on a cross-continent drive, a UC Santa Barbara scientist has found that methane emissions across large parts of the U.S. are higher than currently known, confirming what other more local studies have found. Their research is published in the journal Atmospheric Environment.
Students and faculty of Anacapa School are preparing for a rare event that will allow them to make contact with NASA Astronaut and former Navy SEAL Christopher J. Cassidy. Cassidy is a flight engineer on Expedition 35, the 35th and current long-duration mission to the International Space Station (ISS) and Cassidy’s second spaceflight.
The Rotary Club of Montecito Foundation recently presented ten $1,000 scholarships to deserving Santa Barbara City College students enrolled in Career Technical Education Programs and students intending to transfer to four-year universities. This is the second year that the club’s foundation has awarded two Study of Chinese Language Scholarships and the third time that the Martin and Julia Koobation /Rotary of Montecito Scholarship, named in memory of long-time Rotarian Martin Koobation, was awarded.

Santa Barbara will host metal detectorists from across North America May 18th on the beach in front of Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort, 633 East Cabrillo Boulevard, beginning at 8 a.m. Santa Barbara, along with Atlantic City, N.J., Toronto, Canada, and Rio de Janeiro are the four cities on two continents hosting National Metal Detecting Day, sponsored by Minelab Americas. Detectorists will gather to participate in the world’s largest simultaneous gathering of detectorists.
Shannon Kelly recently joined Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara as the Associate Director of Development. Shannon has over 8 years of experience in non-profit fund development. She graduated from Westminster College of SLC with a BA in English and later earned a graduate certificate in non-profit management at the University of Oregon. Shannon completed an MA degree in Rhetoric, Composition, and Professional Communication from Iowa State University. Originally from Utah, Shannon and her daughter Bree have very much enjoyed living in the Santa Barbara community since 2008 and plan to stay “forever.” Shannon’s daughter Bree has been attending Girls Inc. at GVC since 2010.
Arlington Tavern recently celebrated their one-year anniversary, hosting a party to commemorate their successful first year open. Co-owners and longtime friends Chef Ron True and Diego Barbieri welcomed the public for fine local beer and wines, and delicious bites of tavern favorites. The celebration was particularly commemorative for Chef Ron True, whose second job ever in the culinary world – over 20 years ago – was at SOhO Restaurant, which used to be located in the very same building where Arlington Tavern now resides, at 21 W. Victoria Street.
