PETA Wants Neverland Ranch to Be Refuge for Rescued Animals

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has challenged the owners of Neverland Ranch—once the exclusive domain of reclusive pop star Michael Jackson—to make the Santa Ynez property a high-profile refuge for animals in need of rescue rather than recreate it as a menagerie for exotic animals bought for show.

New Natural Landscape Playground at Zoo

Sixty years ago, Robert Kallman—then owner of a thriving nursery and later a county supervisor—played a pivotal role locating the Santa Barbara Zoo in its current location; as an accent note to that accomplishment, Kallman and his family provided key funding for the creation of a new children’s play garden at the zoo, which opens this weekend.

Council Allows Balloons for Businesses; Tackles “Pump-Flicks” Next

The City Council voted this week to allow downtown businesses to festoon their shops with as many as 12 promotional balloons—no bigger than 18 inches in diameter—as a way to catch the eye of prospective customers. Still unresolved is the city’s position on “pump-flicks”—outdoor video screens installed at the gas pumps of gas stations.

City to Take Over Highway 225

Responding to Mesa neighborhood residents concerned about traffic safety problems on Cliff Drive and Las Positas Road—otherwise known as State Highway 225—the Santa Barbara City Council voted 5-2 to initiate the process to take control over these roads from Caltrans.
