About the Juror – Laura-Susan Thomas began her career as a designer and illustrator for Walt Disney Imagineering. “It’s a unique job because you’re not creating a painting or a graphic design such as a logo,” she explained “You are building a new world.” In 1996, Thomas and her family moved to Orcutt where she worked remotely for the company and became active in the community, teaching art classes for the Arts Fund, based in Santa Barbara. She is also involved with Youth Arts Alive, which offers free arts classes to local children, the Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Her work is distinctively playful; it follows the path of lighthearted animation but never comes off as cartoonish or immature. This is the eighth year that the Jewish Federation’s Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center will host the Santa Barbara Printmakers, a non-profit organization dedicated to printmaking as an art form.  Printmakers are artists who use hand and press printing techniques such as etching, dry point, monotype, mono print, woodblock, collagraph, linocut, clay, lithography, serigraphy (silkscreen), transfer, and digital programs to create unique, one of-a-kind prints as well as editions of identical images.

Recent juried exhibitions sponsored by the Santa Barbara Printmakers have featured nationally recognized printmaking artists as jurors and have attracted entries from the Bay area, Los Angeles, San Diego and beyond.  The Santa Barbara Printmakers evolved from the Monotype Guild, founded in 1989.  This small group focused on a single printmaking technique, monotypes—one-of-a-kind, hand-pulled prints.   The group has since evolved into a multi-generational membership organization of more than 75 active printmakers from

the California Central Coast.  It includes recent college graduates, established artists, and returning artists—all dedicated to artistic exploration and expression using a variety of printing techniques that range from traditional to contemporary.
