Take part in a local version of a worldwide celebration: Bloomsday! In honor of the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s epic novel ULYSSES, this annual holiday is celebrated in Dublin and dozens of other cities around the world. And now Santa Barbara gets to join in the fun.
Santa Barbara BLOOMSDAY! will be June 16 from 5 to 8 at (naturally) the James Joyce Pub, 513 State St. Local authors, actors, and poets will read excerpts from the book, while members of the Folk Orchestra of Santa Barbara will add Irish musical touches. James Joyce books will be on sale at the event via the Mesa Bookstore, and a raffle will be held for a special illustrated edition of the book. The event is free, but donations to the Santa Barbara Library Foundation would be gratefully appreciated.
Why June 16? That is the day on which the novel is set, back in 1904, in Dublin, Ireland. Readers at the Santa Barbara event include Roger Durling, Perie Longo, Lesley Story, James Joyce III, Jay Carlander, and Jinny Webber.
