Local artist Richard Schloss will be at Chaucer’s Books (3321 State Street, 805-682-6787, chaucersbooks.com) to talk about and sign copies of his book PAINTING THE LIGHT on Wednesday, September 7 at 6 p.m.

Twenty years in the making, Painting The Light, is at once a collection of the authors paintings and an analysis of how light and atmosphere work in the landscape. Using nine landscape studies illustrating what happens when light enters our atmosphere the author explores the effects from an artists perspective. More than 150 paintings are included in the 160 page book!
About the Author
Richard Schloss was born in 1953 in Fort Worth Texas but worked and showed in Santa Barbara since 1972. He completed a Master of Fine Arts in Painting at UCSB in 1979 and a BA in Italian in 1981. He has had 35 one-person shows in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Ojai, St Helena and San Francisco. Richard initially explored many different styles and mediums but focused on painting outside in the landscape in 1976 which he continued to do exclusively until the mid 80s. Today he continues to paint en plein air on small paintings but does most of his work in the studio on large paintings. In 1980 he spent a year painting in Europe on an award scholarship and in 1992 he was chosen to paint the diorama backgrounds for The Cartwright Interactions Hall at The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. He has done numerous commissions for public spaces including Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara Historical Museum and The Palo Alto MedRical Foundations in Mountain View and in Sunnyvale, and in 2015 had a large one-man show at the Ventura Museum of Art. His work is included in four museums in the Central California area including the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, The Ridley Tree Museum and the Ventura Museum of Art. He has been a member of Santa Barbara’s THE OAK GROUP since its inception in 1986.He is the author of the book, “Painting The Light”. He is represented today exclusively by Santa Barbara Fine Art.
