Channelkeeper Board Walks are occasional walks and talks around town to explore water from different perspectives. They are designed for the whole community to understand our place in nature, especially with respect to life-giving water. Each will be led by a Channelkeeper Board member, drawing upon the expertise of naturalists, hydrologists, nature film producers, native plant gardeners, and more.
Our October walk will be at Arroyo Burro Beach. It will be led by Boardmember Jeff Phillips, USFWS Senior Fish and Wildlife Biologist. We’ll begin at the east end (towards downtown/the mesa) of the parking lot, exploring the recent habitat restoration. This project daylighted Mesa Creek over its course down from the Mesa, installed a pedestrian bridge, replaced invasive arundo with native plants, and made other improvements to the upper lagoon.
We will continue exploring along the boardwalk to Hendry’s beach, checking out the newly-installed interpretive signs along the way. If there is time, we can then walk or drive up to the Arroyo Burro Open Space at the top of Alan Road and view the extensive creek habitat improvements there.
