Compline with Story and Sound

An evening service intended for rest and contemplation. Compline is led by the Rev. Sarah Thomas. It begins with synthesized ambient music by DJ artist, Andrew Elia, then a transition with loose-leaf brewed herbal tea, and concludes with the opportunity to hear a person share a personal story. 

Our October storyteller is Madeleine Eve Ignon. Madeleine is a multimedia artist and graphic designer from Los Angeles who works in painting, sewing, drawing, and collage. Her work explores the ways painting, graphic design, and craft can be combined, both conceptually and formally. She teaches art and design at Santa Barbara City College and UCSB, where she earned her MFA. She has been awarded residencies at Starry Night Program, New Mexico; Vermont Studio Center; and Drop Forge & Tool, Hudson, NY, and has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Madeleine is one of eight artists in Cosmic Synastry: Collective Codes and Personal Readings, a 2026 group art exhibition curated by Vanessa Ayala and Lucy Bell. The exhibition also features an eclectic selection of media from UCSB Library’s American Religions Collection archive, the most expansive collection of metaphysical sources in the U.S.

Madeleine’s story will be about the surreal and humorous sides of motherhood and finding yourself again after a transformational experience.
