This Maximus Gallery exhibition at Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History opens to the public on March 10.

Although Victorian attitudes in nineteenth-century England about a woman’s place in society prevented women from pursuing an education, an interest in plants was a pastime that was socially acceptable and could provide an income. Many used their skills in drawing and painting to enter the realm of science and make meaningful contributions to the emerging field of botany by writing and illustrating books. Some were either published anonymously, or with their husband’s name, or credited simply “By a Lady.”

Drawn by a Lady sheds light on the life and work of some of these women authors and illustrators.

Included in Museum admission and free for Members.

Exhibition runs through July 2.
