Photography Exhibition: Edible Insect Initiative

The Edible Insect Initiative exhibit will be up in the UCSB GlassBox Gallery during the week of April 1st to April 4th, with a reception event taking place on April 4th from 5:00PM to 7:30PM.

This exhibit will showcase a photography exhibition from documentary photographer Umberto Diecinove’s film titled I N S C T S. The photographs will depict the farming and consumption of insects as a part cultural cuisine all around the world.

Photography by Camille Zimmer and video art by Katja Seltmann, Ph.D., will also be on display.

During the reception, we will bring together community members for a discussion panel and taste-testing opportunities for various insect dishes. The panel will feature experts such as Aly Moore of Bugible and Monica Martinez of Don Bugito.

Insect dishes will be provided by Santa Barbara’s very own La Calenda SB. By bringing this perspective to UCSB, we seek to highlight indigenous culture, dissolve negative preconceptions towards the role of insects in nutrition, explore the potential of insects in addressing climate change in the agriculture sector, and promote healing and community.

This event has been organized by Anthropology PhD candidate, MacKenzie Wade, and Environmental Studies undergraduate, Alex Carlin. Sponsored by Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities, the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, and The Green Initiative Fund.
