August Program – ‘Let’s Start the Conversation’
It may be uncomfortable to discuss Advance Health Care Planning and talk about your wishes when it comes to health care services or end-of-life. In this interactive presentation, Jeanne M. West, Community Engagement Manager, Hospice of Santa Barbara, will walk us through why ‘talking’ matters. She will motivate us to think about and openly discuss the care and support that matters to us right now, as well as at
end-of-life. Personal life stories are used throughout the presentation making this ‘taboo’ subject clear, understandable and real.
Jeanne M. West is a Registered Nurse with a Master’s Degree in Health Administration. Her passion has been her work in long term care over the thirty-five years that she has lived in Santa Barbara. Prior to her work at Hospice of Santa Barbara, she was the Enrollment Coordinator for DASH from 2012 to 2018.
Topics to be covered include: importance of early and repeated conversations with chosen “agent”, determining that the person is willing and able to accept responsibility and follow your wishes; strategies for self-inquiry—-what quality of life means to you; and, knowledge that personal values influence decisions about how we receive health information, our daily decision-making and the role of one’s agent in time of crisis.
Community Partners in Caring is a 21-year old agency designed to help seniors live independently while maintaining dignity, respect and quality of life.
