Eva Zuckerman Sculpting a Legacy Opening Reception

She grew up in a large family with a grandfather who was a quarry owner and the first Jewish mayor of his town, which had few Jews. After the Nazis invaded Hungary her family fled, but at twelve years old she was separated from them and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. One of her tasks was to take rocks and chisel them into stones for roads. Years after she was liberated, emigrated to America, married and a mother, she enrolled in a sculpting class. Her teacher marveled at her skill with stone. Now an accomplished sculptor, she will exhibit a selection of her work and speak of her experience of turmoil and loss as a child; the miraculous in her life of coming to the United States, her family and her art; and her enduring hope for children and the future.
