A 7.5 mrt moderately strenuous hike on the Gaviota Coast with elevation gain about 1200 feet.  It’s a lightly used trail on the inland side of the Highway 101 about 2 miles north of Refugio State Park. This trail leads us high into the foothills for great views of the valley and coast, including the channel islands.  The trail starts on a dirt ranch road and winds its way through an active agricultural operation, then up a riparian coastal canyon alongside a beautiful and shaded creek.  At the creek crossing, the trail narrows, splits into a loop, and ascends fairly steeply through coastal chaparral to about 1350 feet elevation.  We’ll have a 30 minute break at the top for lunch.

Appropriate for Intermediate hikers and beginners with good conditioning. This is not an easy hike and you should not attend if you do not exercise regularly. Under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent.

The hike leader has the right and responsibility to refuse a participant for any reason, including lack of appropriate clothing/footwear/gear, sufficient water or food, and/or behavior deemed unacceptable to the leader and other participants. You may be asked to leave if you do not comply with any and all leader requests at any time during the hike.

MUST bring 2 liters of water, snacks, and sun protection. This will be a 4-5 hour excursion with 20 minute drive to trailhead, 3-4 hrs of hiking, and the return drive. Carpooling is possible but you must be willing to share the cost of fuel. Meet at Starbucks in La Cumbre Plaza, 3815 State Street Space #G-141, Santa Barbara, CA 93105 at 9:00 am.  If you are coming from north of Santa Barbara, you can meet us at the trailhead and please call/text for instructions.  No dogs.  Rain cancels.
