Santa Barbara’s Congregation B’nai B’rith and Shtetl Home Companion Productions will present the new, improved radio drama/musical, “I Married a Golem!” on Saturday May 10, 7 pm, and on Sunday May 11, 3 pm at Congregation B’nai B’rith in Santa Barbara, at 1000 San Antonio Creek Road. In a 1930s radio studio, a ragtag acting troupe spins for listeners the tale of an unusual marriage. Fred Nadis, who concocted the script and music, says the production “blends the ‘you can’t marry an outsider’ plot of early Yiddish theater with a generous dollop of ‘Beauty and the Beast.’”

In this case, the beast the young woman is trapped into marrying is a golem—a  magic being made of clay brought to life by the proper incantations—meant to serve as guardians of the Jewish ghetto during times of turmoil. She has plenty to sing about. The music ensemble Kalinka will provide accompaniment in a klezmer and 1930s style. This production features more songs, goofy jokes, and sound effects. Performances Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
